Now, I know that humans are highly predictable beings, but I didn’t really know just HOW predictable we are; that is until I took a job as a maid at an upscale hotel. Let me tell you, after awhile you were able to get a general idea of the age bracket a particular guest fell into, relationship status, and profession. This is a story, based on true accounts, with some embellishment for fun and to keep it interesting of my experience as a housekeeper. The names of my characters, the hotel, and city have been changed, but the idea is the same.
--- Day 1-- in the Field
First, I’ll begin with some notes about myself:
Name: Aida (my mom is a huge fan of the musical)
Age: 22
Occupation: Housekeeper at upscale hotel/ sociology student at the University of Alberta
City: Edmonton Alberta
I begin by meeting my fellow colleagues, and I receive the first piece of my assigned uniform (a name tag! And shirt) I am now a member of this “ingroup”. Ok enough of this official jargan, I meet my co-workers who are rather nice, and I get my name tag and a navy blue blouse, with white lace around the collar. I’m supposed to wear a navy and white dress but they don’t have any that will fit me just yet. So I am forced to wear a %100 polyester shirt....fun! This is just so practical in the summer time, I mean it’s 30 degrees Celsius outside and I’m wearing a shirt made out of a plastic based fabric that doesn’t breathe..brilliant idea! The things I do in the name of sociology and the fact that I’m a poor student and in need of money.
